Concept Explanation

The past continuous uses was or were plus verb-ing. It presents an action as being in progress at a particular moment in the past, or gives background to a story rather than presenting the action as a completed whole.

A common pattern combines a longer background action in the past continuous with a shorter event in the past simple: I was presenting when the connection failed. Use while especially for two actions continuing at the same time.

  • In progress: At 10:00, I was reviewing the design.
  • Interrupted: We were talking when the call ended.
  • Simultaneous: While I was testing, Maya was documenting.
  • Background: Rain was falling and people were waiting outside.

Examples & Patterns

The continuous forms establish what was already happening when the shorter incident occurred.

Incident timelineEnglish

While I was reconnecting, my teammate was answering questions.
The call resumed after two minutes, and we completed the presentation.

Common Mistakes

Identify why each pattern is incorrect so you can transfer the correction to new sentences.

  • Omitting was or were: “I working when you called.”
  • Using the continuous for every completed step in a sequence.
  • Using was with plural subjects: “They was waiting.”
  • Confusing when and while so the time relationship becomes unclear.

Communication Practice

Apply the grammar to a realistic personal or professional message.

How would you explain a work interruption without making the timeline confusing?

Short answer: Use past continuous for the activity already in progress and past simple for the interruption.

Explore the detailed answer

For example: “I was preparing the release notes when the production alert appeared. I paused the document, checked the dashboard, and contacted the support lead.” The tense change makes the interruption and response easy to follow.

Possible follow-ups

  • • How would you add a teammate's simultaneous action?
  • • What changes if both actions were completed?
