iOS Architecture

Design responsibilities, state, dependencies, and navigation so iOS features remain understandable, testable, and economical to change.

Start iOS architecture

The architecture mental model

Protect important decisions from unstable details.

Architecture is not a folder template. It is the shape of ownership and communication across a system. The complete sequence moves from practical boundaries and presentation patterns into navigation, data access, state flow, modules, testing, and evidence-based architecture selection.

01

Responsibilities

Give behavior and state one clear owner.

02

Boundaries

Separate concerns that change for different reasons.

03

Dependencies

Keep policy independent from replaceable details.

04

Trade-offs

Add structure only when its benefit exceeds its cost.

Module outcomes

Make architectural choices with evidence.

The twelve-lesson module finishes with testable boundaries and a Learning Library mini project. Each lesson compares costs as well as benefits instead of presenting one universal pattern.

  • Map responsibilities and direct dependencies deliberately.
  • Keep MVC, MVVM, and navigation responsibilities focused.
  • Design data boundaries and inject collaborators with explicit lifetimes.
  • Model traceable state transitions and asynchronous effects.
  • Organize by feature and enforce valuable boundaries with Swift packages.
  • Verify behavior through focused tests and an end-to-end architecture project.

  2. 02Separation of Concerns and Dependency DirectionCreate boundaries that keep policy independent from UI frameworks, storage, networking, and other implementation details.6 min
  3. 03MVC and the Massive View Controller ProblemUse Apple's MVC responsibly by keeping controllers focused on presentation coordination instead of absorbing every concern.6 min
  4. 04MVVM in UIKit and SwiftUIDesign presentation models with explicit state and actions without turning the view model into a second application layer.6 min
  5. 05Coordinators and Navigation ArchitectureModel navigation as feature flow, centralize screen construction, and keep destinations independent from route mechanics.6 min
  6. 06Repository and Service LayersDesign data and capability boundaries that hide infrastructure without creating meaningless pass-through abstractions.6 min
  7. 07Dependency InjectionMake collaborators and lifetimes explicit through initializer injection, composition roots, and focused test replacements.6 min
  8. 08State Management and Unidirectional Data FlowModel features as explicit state, actions, transitions, and effects so updates remain traceable and testable.7 min
  9. 09Feature-Based Project OrganizationOrganize source code around product capabilities while preserving clear app, feature, domain, and shared boundaries.5 min
  10. 10Modular Architecture and Swift PackagesUse Swift package targets and access control to enforce valuable boundaries without creating an expensive module graph.6 min
  11. 11Testing Architectural BoundariesUse Swift Testing, focused fakes, and a balanced test strategy to verify behavior without coupling tests to implementation details.7 min
  12. 12Choosing an Architecture and Mini ProjectChoose proportionate boundaries and integrate the complete module in a testable Learning Library feature.7 min
